Fake skincare is a real problem in Bangladesh. Popular products like CeraVe, COSRX Snail Mucin, Beauty of Joseon sunscreen and The Ordinary serums are copied and sold online, at markets and sometimes in shops, often at prices that look too good to be true. Fakes can contain the wrong ingredients, no active ingredients at all, or contaminants that irritate skin. This guide shows you the warning signs to check before and after you buy.
Why fakes are so common
Imported skincare is expensive, and demand for trending K-beauty and dermatologist brands is high. That creates an easy market for copies. Many fakes are sold through social media pages with no address, no return policy and prices far below the market.
Warning signs before you buy
- The price is far below the market. If most trusted sellers charge around ৳1,500 for a product and someone sells it for ৳500, be careful. Small discounts are normal, but huge ones are a red flag.
- The seller has no clear business details. Look for a real website, a customer service number, a written return or exchange policy and a history of reviews.
- Product photos are blurry or copied. Fake sellers often use brand stock images instead of photos of the actual stock.
- The listing has spelling mistakes in the product or brand name.
- “New stock” of discontinued or renamed products. Brands often reformulate or rename products. Sellers still pushing an old version in large quantities may be selling old or copied stock.
Warning signs when the product arrives
- Packaging quality. Check for blurry printing, uneven colours, misaligned labels, cheap plastic, loose caps or seals that look re-glued.
- Labelling. Genuine products carry a full ingredient list, a manufacturer or importer name and address, a batch or lot code, and a manufacturing or expiry date or period-after-opening symbol. Missing details are a warning sign.
- Language and spelling. Spelling mistakes, odd fonts or wrong logos on the box or bottle are common on fakes.
- Texture, colour and smell. If you know the product, compare it. A sunscreen that leaves a heavy white cast when it normally does not, a serum with the wrong colour, or a strong perfume in a product that should be fragrance-free are all red flags.
- Your skin’s reaction. Sudden burning, rashes or breakouts from a product that usually suits you can mean it is not genuine. Stop using it.
Products that are often copied in Bangladesh
- CeraVe cleansers and Moisturizing Cream
- COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence
- Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun
- The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%
- Popular sunscreens and whitening or glutathione creams
These are not bad products, quite the opposite. They are copied because they are so popular. Just be extra careful where you buy them.
A note on different versions
Not every difference means a fake. Big brands make products in different countries for different markets, so the same product can have different packaging, sizes or even slightly different formulas. CeraVe, for example, is made for both European and Asian markets. A trustworthy seller tells you which version they stock. On our product pages we note the market version and publish the ingredient list for the version we sell.
How to buy safely
- Buy from sellers with a real website, a clear return or exchange policy and customer support.
- Compare prices across several trusted stores before ordering.
- Choose cash on delivery when possible, and check the parcel in front of the delivery person.
- Record an unboxing video. It protects you if something is wrong.
- Patch-test any new product on a small area for 24 hours before full use.
How we source at Lume and Layer
We sell carefully selected products from trusted suppliers and established distribution channels, and we review the packaging, labelling and condition of every item before dispatch. Our product pages list ingredients from the brand’s own published information, and we point out where a product’s marketing does not match its ingredient list. We offer cash on delivery across Bangladesh, so you can check your parcel before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Can a QR code or barcode prove a product is real?
Not on its own. Barcodes and QR codes can be copied easily. Treat them as one check among many, alongside the seller, the price, the packaging and the labelling.
Is a cheaper price always fake?
No. Sales, older packaging and different market versions can be cheaper. But a price far below every trusted seller deserves extra caution.
What should I do if I think I bought a fake?
Stop using it, contact the seller with photos and your unboxing video, and if your skin reacted badly, see a doctor.
