Why positions seven, eight and nine matter in the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Ingredient lists run in descending order of concentration. On most products the hero ingredient turns up somewhere in the last quarter, present in an amount too small to do the work the packaging implies.

There is more to it than the ceramides alone. Cholesterol sits at 15 and phytosphingosine at 20. Ceramides, cholesterol and a fatty acid precursor together are the three lipid families that make up the skin barrier, and having all three is a formulation decision, not a marketing one.

We will not overclaim on your behalf. This is a cleanser: it is on your face for perhaps forty seconds and then it goes down the drain. Ceramides in a rinse-off product do less than ceramides in a moisturiser you leave on. But they are here, they are high, and the formula is built so they are not stripped back out on the rinse.

The CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser has no sulfates

The cleansing is done by PEG-40 Stearate at position 4 and Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate at 13. There is no sodium lauryl sulfate and no sodium laureth sulfate anywhere in the twenty-four.

That is the practical reason it does not foam. Sulfates are what produce the thick lather people associate with getting clean, and they are also what produces the tight, squeaky feeling afterwards. Take the sulfates out and you lose both at once.

Sodium lauroyl lactylate is worth knowing by name. It is derived from lactic acid and fatty acids, it is mild, and it doubles as an emulsifier. It is a considerably more expensive way to build a cleanser than a sulfate base.

The alcohols here are not the alcohol you are worried about

Three entries on the list contain the word alcohol: Cetearyl Alcohol at 3, Stearyl Alcohol at 5 and Cetyl Alcohol at 22. Every one of them is a fatty alcohol.

Fatty alcohols are waxy solids derived from plant oils. They soften skin, thicken the formula and help it spread. They have nothing in common with ethanol or denatured alcohol, which is the volatile solvent that can dry and irritate skin.

This confuses a lot of people, and we would rather explain it once than have you avoid a good product over a word. There is no drying alcohol in the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser at all.

What the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser pack does not tell you

Two things we would want to know, and neither is on the front of the bottle.

The hyaluronic acid is 14th. Sodium hyaluronate is one of the ingredients CeraVe markets on this product, and it sits mid-pack, below the carbomer. It is present. It is not a headline dose. Hyaluronic acid also works at very low percentages, so this is not a scandal — but if you are buying this bottle for the hyaluronic acid, buy a serum instead.

The preservative is phenoxyethanol, at 16. It is one of the most widely used and best studied cosmetic preservatives there is, and it is in an enormous number of products. Some people prefer to avoid it. Those people deserve to find that out here rather than after opening the bottle.

The CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser barely foams, and that is deliberate

CeraVe’s own instructions say to lather it between your palms. In practice you will get a thin, milky slip rather than foam, and new users regularly assume they have been sold a faulty bottle.

You have not. A cream cleanser without sulfates cannot produce a rich lather, and the absence of lather is the direct consequence of the choice that makes it gentle. Judge it by how your skin feels ninety seconds after rinsing, not by the bubbles.

How to use the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Wet your face with lukewarm water. Not hot.
Work a small amount between your palms, then massage it over your face in circles for about thirty seconds.
Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Do not rub.
Follow with your serum, then a moisturiser.
Twice a day, or once at night if your skin is very dry.

If you wear sunscreen or makeup, this is not a first cleanse. Use an oil or balm first, then the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser as your second step. A gentle cream cleanser is not built to break down a water-resistant SPF on its own.

In Dhaka’s humid months you may find it leaves a slight film if you use too much. That is the emollient base doing its job. Use less rather than switching to something harsher.

Who the CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser suits

Buy it if your skin is normal, dry or dehydrated, if other cleansers leave you tight, if you are using retinoids or acids and need a cleanser that does not add to the load, or if fragrance is a problem for you.

Think twice if your skin is very oily or acne-prone. This is an emollient cream cleanser and some oily skins find it does not fully clear the day. The Foaming version of the same product is built for you instead.

Because there are no sulfates in it. Lather comes from sulfate surfactants, and so does the tight feeling afterwards. Losing the foam is the price of losing the strip.

The ceramides earn their billing here. The hyaluronic acid does not.

Neither of those stops us recommending it. The CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser does the difficult part right, which is being genuinely mild without being useless, and it does it at a price that is not absurd.
