In a market where a “gentle” cleanser routinely runs to forty, that is the single best argument for it — and this page will show you the list so you can count them yourself.

What Bioderma Sensibio H2O actually is

Bioderma Sensibio H2O is a no-rinse micellar water for sensitive skin: a clear, water-thin liquid that lifts makeup, sunscreen residue, sweat and airborne dirt off the skin using micelles rather than foam. You soak a cotton pad, wipe, and — according to Bioderma — you are done.

NAOS, the French laboratory behind Bioderma, invented no-rinse micellar cleansing, and Bioderma Sensibio H2O is the original product of that category. Everything else on the shelf calling itself micellar water is following this bottle. That is not marketing on our part; it is simply the history.

The 500 ml is sold as a flip-cap bottle and, in some markets, a pump. Bioderma also makes 100 ml, 250 ml and a 500 ml pump version. All ten ingredients

Aqua/Water/Eau, PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Fructooligosaccharides, Mannitol, Xylitol, Rhamnose, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Propylene Glycol, Cetrimonium Bromide, Disodium EDTA.

That is the entire Bioderma Sensibio H2O formula. No fragrance. No alcohol. No parabens. No sulfates. No essential oils. No plant extract other than cucumber. For reactive, easily-stung skin, a list this short is not a compromise — it is the product.

What each one is doing

• PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides — the micelle former. This single ingredient does all the cleansing in Bioderma Sensibio H2O. Micelles are tiny spheres with a water-loving outside and an oil-loving inside; they surround makeup and oil and lift it onto the pad.
• Fructooligosaccharides, Mannitol, Xylitol, Rhamnose — these four sugars are Bioderma’s patented D.A.F.™ complex, which the brand says raises the skin’s tolerance threshold. They are also humectants, which is why the water does not leave skin feeling stripped.
• Cucumber fruit extract — the soothing ingredient, and the only botanical in the bottle.
• Propylene glycol — a solvent and humectant. Widely used, occasionally avoided; worth knowing it is in there.
• Cetrimonium bromide — see below, because this one deserves its own paragraph.
• Disodium EDTA — a chelator that stops minerals in water interfering with the formula.

The one ingredient we would flag

Cetrimonium bromide is the only preservative in Bioderma Sensibio H2O, and it is also a cationic surfactant — meaning it does double duty as a preservative and as part of the cleansing system. It is permitted and used at low levels across the EU, and it is what allows a ten-ingredient water-based product to stay stable without parabens or phenoxyethanol.

It is also, at higher concentrations, a known irritant. Bioderma does not publish the level used, and this is a product people wipe across their eyelids. We are not telling you to worry — millions of bottles a year say otherwise — but if you have ever reacted to a micellar water and could not work out why, this is the ingredient to look at. Patch test if you are unsure.

The claims — and the numbers underneath them

Bioderma puts real figures on the front of Bioderma Sensibio H2O and, to its credit, prints the footnotes. Most shops reprint the headline and drop the footnote. We are going to do the opposite.

• “Removes 99% of make-up.” Footnote: evaluation of make-up remover efficacy on 10 subjects. Ten people.
• “Removes 99% of pollution.” Footnote: clinical evaluation of the cleansing effect against particles modelling atmospheric pollution on 11 subjects. Eleven people.
• “Removes 99% of pollen.” Footnote: clinical evaluation of cleansing efficacy toward pollen particles, test on 20 volunteers. Twenty.
• “Cleanses 78% of heavy metals.” Same footnote family.
• “90% report a decrease of unpleasant sensation in 28 days.” Footnote: observational study of unpleasant sensations, percentage of satisfaction, on 400 subjects for 28 days.

Here is the honest reading. The three “-99%” figures come from very small panels — ten to twenty people each — which is normal for cosmetic efficacy testing but is not the same as a large clinical trial. The 400-subject satisfaction study is by far the strongest number Bioderma publishes, and it is the one the marketing shouts about least. Ninety per cent of four hundred people reporting less discomfort over four weeks tells you more about whether Bioderma Sensibio H2O will suit sensitive skin than any of the 99% figures do.

“One bottle sold every second” — what the asterisk says

Bioderma’s most-repeated line about this product is that one bottle is sold every second somewhere in the world. It appears on the brand’s own imagery, and we have put that image on this page.

Read the footnote and it says: “Sell-in, FY 2023, 1 bottle sold every 1.11 second.”

Three things quietly change between the headline and the footnote. It is every 1.11 seconds, not every second. It is sell-in — bottles shipped to retailers — not sell-through, so it counts stock sitting on shelves, not bottles bought by people. And it is FY 2023, a fixed historical year, not an ongoing rate.

None of that makes it a lie, and it is still an enormous number. But “one bottle every 1.11 seconds shipped to retailers in the 2023 financial year” is a different sentence from the one on the poster, and you can decide for yourself how much weight to give it.

“No rinse” — the claim worth thinking about

Bioderma is explicit that this product requires no rinsing, and that convenience is a large part of why people love it. It is also the part of the product most worth thinking about.

A micellar water works by leaving a little surfactant on the skin to hold onto the dirt it has lifted. If you do not rinse, some of that surfactant stays on your face. For most people, most of the time, that is fine — the concentration is low and it is what the product is designed to do.

But there are cases where rinsing afterwards is the better call:

• If you are applying actives next. Acids, retinoids and vitamin C perform more predictably on genuinely clean skin than on a light surfactant film.
• If your skin feels tacky or tight afterwards. That is residue, and a splash of water fixes it.
• If you are using it as a full cleanse rather than a first cleanse after a full day of sunscreen and makeup.

Where the no-rinse claim genuinely earns its keep: travel, long flights, load-shedding, a water outage, taking makeup off a child, or the nights when standing at a basin is more than you can face. Bioderma Sensibio H2O is the best product in your bathroom on those nights, and that is worth the shelf space on its own.

How Bioderma Sensibio H2O fits Bangladesh

Bioderma Sensibio H2O suits this market unusually well, and for reasons that have nothing to do with skincare fashion.

Dhaka air carries a genuine particulate load. A micellar water that lifts fine particles off skin is doing something measurable here in a way it might not in a small European town. Bioderma tests the product against particles modelling atmospheric pollution precisely because this is a real problem in dense cities, and Dhaka is denser than most.

Three practical notes for using it here:

• Use it as your first cleanse, not your only one. Bioderma Sensibio H2O on a pad, then a proper cleanser like our CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser. That combination handles sunscreen and city grime properly.
• Store it out of the heat. It is water-based with a single preservative. A bottle on a sunny windowsill through a Dhaka summer is not doing itself any favours.
• The 500 ml is the right size. Micellar water gets used generously — most people go through far more than they expect — and the per-millilitre price on the small bottles is poor.

How to use it

The instructions on Bioderma Sensibio H2O, verbatim in substance: morning and/or evening, seven days a week. Soak a cotton pad. Gently cleanse and remove makeup from face and eyes. For long-wear or heavy makeup, let the pad sit on the eyelids for a few seconds. Do not forget the neck. No rinsing required.

What we would add from experience:

• Saturate the pad properly. A dry pad drags, and dragging is what irritates skin, not the product.
• Press, do not scrub. Hold it on stubborn eye makeup for five seconds and it lifts without rubbing.
• Reusable cotton rounds work fine and cut the cost and waste considerably, since the bottle will outlast a lot of disposable pads.
• It is safe around the eyes — that is what it was built for — but do not let it get into them.

Who it suits

Buy Bioderma Sensibio H2O if: you have sensitive or reactive skin; you wear makeup or sunscreen daily and want a reliable first cleanse; you react to fragrance; you want a makeup remover that will not sting your eyes; you travel, or your water supply is not always reliable; or you simply want the shortest ingredient list you can find.

Look elsewhere if: you want a single-step cleanse after a full face of long-wear makeup, where an oil or balm does more; you have very oily, congested skin and want deep cleansing, where a gel cleanser is better; you avoid propylene glycol; or you want a product that treats something, because Bioderma Sensibio H2O cleanses and nothing else.

What Bioderma does not publish

• No concentration for cetrimonium bromide, or for anything else in the list.
• No pH figure.
• No period-after-opening symbol on the brand page — go by the printed date on the bottle.
• No full study text behind the -99% claims, only the sample sizes in the footnotes.

Bioderma Sensibio H2O against the alternatives

Against a cheap supermarket micellar water. The difference is the ingredient list, not the marketing. Most budget micellar waters carry fragrance, more preservatives, and sometimes alcohol. Bioderma Sensibio H2O carries ten ingredients and no fragrance. If your skin is not sensitive, a cheaper bottle will do the job. If it is, this is why the price gap exists.

Against a cleansing oil or balm. An oil dissolves makeup and sunscreen more completely, then emulsifies and rinses away. Bioderma Sensibio H2O lifts rather than dissolves, and leaves nothing to rinse. For a full face of long-wear makeup, an oil wins. For a normal day, sunscreen and sweat, the micellar water is faster and gentler.

Against a wipe. Not close. Wipes drag, carry more preservative per use, and are worse for the skin and the bin. A cotton pad soaked in Bioderma Sensibio H2O does the same job with less friction.

Against Sébium H2O. Same technology, different tuning — Sébium is built for oily and acne-prone skin, Sensibio for sensitive. If your main issue is congestion rather than reactivity, ask us about Sébium instead.

Authenticity, batch codes and storage

Micellar water is one of the most counterfeited products in South Asia for an obvious reason: it is a clear liquid in a clear bottle, and you cannot tell by looking. A fake bottle of Bioderma Sensibio H2O can be water with a surfactant in it and you would not know until your skin told you.

Four checks on any bottle, wherever you buy it:

• The label print. Genuine labels are crisp, with the bilingual French and English wording and the N.A.O.S. micellar technology mark. Fakes are usually slightly soft or mis-spaced.
• “Made in France” printed on the front label, bottom right. Photographed on this page.
• The batch code embossed on the bottle, matching the code printed on the label.
• The liquid. Completely clear, water-thin, no smell at all. Any scent means it is not this product.

On storage: keep Bioderma Sensibio H2O below 30°C, capped, away from direct sun. It is a simple formula with a single preservative, so heat is the main thing that will shorten its life. Do not decant it into a smaller travel bottle for long periods — every transfer is a chance to contaminate it.

Questions we get asked

Do I really not need to rinse?

Bioderma says no rinsing is needed. We say rinse if you are putting actives on afterwards, or if your skin feels tacky. Otherwise, follow the label.

Does it remove waterproof mascara?

Partly. Bioderma Sensibio H2O will take off most eye makeup if you let the pad sit for a few seconds, but genuinely waterproof formulas need a bi-phase or oil remover.

Does it remove sunscreen?

Better than a water-based gel cleanser does, but Bioderma Sensibio H2O will not remove it completely on its own. Modern sunscreen filters are oil-soluble; use this first, then a proper cleanser.

What is the difference between Sensibio and Sébium H2O?

Bioderma Sensibio H2O is the sensitive-skin version — the one on this page. Sébium is formulated for combination to oily and acne-prone skin. Same idea, different tuning. Buying the wrong one is common.

Is it safe in pregnancy?

Nothing in Bioderma Sensibio H2O is a recognised pregnancy concern. Confirm with your doctor rather than a shop.

How long does 500 ml last?

Once daily on the face, a 500 ml bottle of Bioderma Sensibio H2O lasts three to five months. Twice daily with makeup removal, closer to two. It goes faster than you expect, which is why the big bottle is the sensible buy.

Why is the price higher than abroad?

Freight, duty and a small retailer margin on an imported French product — Bioderma Sensibio H2O is made in France and shipped here. We would rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise.
