Product Overview

The CeraVe SA Cleanser is a gel cleanser built for skin with texture — rough patches, small bumps, congestion — rather than for skin with active acne. It pairs salicylic acid with niacinamide, gluconolactone and CeraVe’s three signature ceramides, and it rinses off rather than staying on the skin.

That last point matters more than it sounds. A rinse-off acid has seconds of contact time, not hours. The CeraVe SA Cleanser is therefore a gentler introduction to chemical exfoliation than any leave-on acid, and a poor substitute for one if your skin needs real treatment.

It comes in 237 ml as standard, with 473 ml also made, and a 355 ml sold only in the United States. It is fragrance-free, non-comedogenic and allergy-tested, and CeraVe positions it for face and body.

CeraVe sells this cleanser under a different name in almost every market, and never tells you they are the same thing.

We checked the ingredient lists on CeraVe’s American, British, Canadian, Indian and Middle Eastern sites and they are identical — all twenty-seven ingredients, in the same order. The 236 ml you sometimes see is simply 8 fl oz rounded down instead of up. If you have been comparing the CeraVe SA Cleanser against the “SA Smoothing Cleanser” wondering which is better, stop: they are one bottle.

What it is not: the SA Smoothing Cream, a leave-on moisturiser with a completely different formula; the SA Lotion for Rough & Bumpy Skin, which is a body lotion and a registered 3% drug; and the Acne Control Cleanser, which really does carry 2% salicylic acid on its label.

The Percentage CeraVe Will Not Tell You

We checked six official CeraVe country sites and the United States FDA drug label database. The salicylic acid percentage in the CeraVe SA Cleanser is not published anywhere.

That silence is a choice. CeraVe puts “2% Salicylic Acid” directly in the product name of its Blemish Control Cleanser. It could do the same here and does not. So any Bangladeshi listing quoting a figure for this product has invented it, and we will not join them.

You can check this yourself: CeraVe’s own product page lists no percentage, while its Acne Control Cleanser puts 2% right on the label. Same brand, same shelf, one figure published and one withheld.

Here is the related fact that actually matters: the CeraVe SA Cleanser is a cosmetic, not a drug. It does not appear in the FDA drug database at all, while three of its siblings do — the SA Lotion at 3%, the Renewing SA Cream, and the Acne Control Cleanser at 2%. No Drug Facts panel, no declared active, no acne treatment claim from CeraVe. It is sold for texture, not for treating breakouts.

Two Formulas, One Barcode

This is the part no other listing will tell you, and it is the reason our ingredient section reads the way it does.

Two different formulas of the CeraVe SA Cleanser are in circulation right now. The older one has twenty-seven ingredients. The newer one has twenty-four: it drops corn oil, sodium chloride and cholecalciferol (vitamin D), and it swaps the order of the two main cleansing agents — which means their concentrations changed, not just the additives.

CeraVe’s own Australian site publishes the twenty-four-ingredient version. Its British site still publishes the twenty-seven. British shop shelves carry the twenty-four. And both ship under the same barcode, so scanning the box will not tell you which one you have.

• Salicylic acid — the BHA. Oil-soluble, so it reaches inside a congested pore rather than only skimming the surface. Percentage not published.
• Gluconolactone — a polyhydroxy acid, sixth in the list. Gentler than salicylic acid, and it holds water rather than stripping it.
• Niacinamide — vitamin B3, fifth. Supports the barrier and helps with tone over time.
• Ceramide NP, AP and EOP with cholesterol and phytosphingosine — the lipid set skin uses to rebuild its own barrier as the acids exfoliate.
• Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid — present, but near the end of the list. Do not buy this as a hyaluronic acid product.

No fragrance, no drying alcohol, no dye. CeraVe publishes no percentage for any ingredient in this product — not the acid, not the niacinamide, not the ceramides, which are always described as a count rather than a concentration.

Three Things We Will Not Claim

1. We will not quote a salicylic acid percentage. CeraVe does not publish one. Every figure circulating online for the CeraVe SA Cleanser is somebody’s guess.

2. We will not call it an acne wash. Two large American retailers do. CeraVe does not — this product is not an acne drug and the brand markets it for rough, bumpy texture. If you want a declared acne cleanser, CeraVe makes one at 2% and calls it that on the label.

3. We will not promise vitamin D. Some listings advertise it. It is in the older twenty-seven-ingredient formula and absent from the newer twenty-four. Since both ship under one barcode, nobody can honestly promise it.

The CeraVe SA Cleanser suits you if you have rough or bumpy texture on your face, arms or shoulders; if physical scrubs have irritated you; if you want to start chemical exfoliation gently; if you need fragrance-free; or if you already use a strong leave-on active and want your cleanser to be the mild step.

Look elsewhere if you want a treatment-strength acne wash with a stated percentage, if you need a heavy makeup remover — this is a second cleanse, not an oil cleanser — or if your barrier is currently broken or inflamed.

Two things worth adding that CeraVe does not say. Keep the contact time short — this is a wash, not a mask, and leaving it on longer does not make it work better. And avoid the eye area; CeraVe’s own warning is to avoid contact with the eyes and rinse thoroughly if it happens.

How Often

How often to use the CeraVe SA Cleanser, building up rather than starting at the brand’s maximum:

CeraVe says twice daily, morning and evening. We would build up rather than start there: every other day for the first week, once daily in the second week if nothing stings, then twice daily only if your skin is genuinely comfortable.

The cleanser is the step people forget to count. If you already use a leave-on acid or a retinoid, adding the CeraVe SA Cleanser twice a day on top is the quickest route to over-exfoliation.

Where It Fits in Your Routine

The CeraVe SA Cleanser is a cleanser, so it goes first — but which first depends on the time of day.

Morning: the CeraVe SA Cleanser, then toner if you use one, then serum, moisturiser and sunscreen.

Evening: if you wear makeup or sunscreen, remove it with an oil or balm first, then use this as your second cleanse. A gel wash will not shift long-wear sunscreen on its own.

How to check the CeraVe SA Cleanser you receive:

Check the barcode against the pack: 3606000537552 on the American 237 ml, 3337875684118 on the UK and EU 236 ml. Both are genuine; they are different market packs of the same product.

Store it upright, capped, at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. Do not decant it.

CeraVe publishes no shelf life, no period-after-opening figure, and no country of manufacture for this product on any of its country sites. We will not invent any of the three. Indian retail data names L’Oréal India in Pune as the manufacturer for Indian stock, which tells you nothing about the pack we ship.
