Two organic filters plus two minerals is a genuinely robust system, and the Tinosorbs are among the best broad-spectrum filters available — they are approved in the EU and much of Asia, though not in the United States, which is why American products rarely contain them.

Why Lips Need Sun Protection

Two numbers appear on this stick and they measure different things. SPF 50 describes protection against UVB — the wavelength band responsible for sunburn and for most of the direct DNA damage in the outer layers. PA++++ is the Japanese Persistent Pigment Darkening scale, and it describes UVA protection. UVA penetrates deeper, drives pigmentation and photoageing, and passes through window glass. A lip product carrying only an SPF number tells you nothing about UVA at all.
PA++++ is the top of that scale. In practice it means the filter system was built to hold up across the whole UV spectrum rather than just block the wavelengths that make you go red. The third thing worth knowing is that laboratory SPF figures are measured at 2 mg per square centimetre. Nobody applies that much of anything.
